What is Dental Restoration?

Cosmetic_dentistry “Dental restoration” is a phrase heard frequently in the world of cosmetic dentistry. While the definition of what constitutes a restoration may vary from one insurance company to another, practitioners of general or cosmetic dentistry typically use the term to cover all procedures that are designed to restore your teeth and gums to their original form and function.

The list of dental restorations includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Structural restorations

  • Fillings – This procedure, which patches holes in teeth that develop as a result of decay, is the most common dental restoration.
  • Crowns – These are tooth-shaped coverings or “caps” that fit over a significantly damaged tooth to restore its function and appearance.
  • Implants – These posts are embedded in a patient’s jawbone to secure a crown or denture to the jaw when a natural tooth or teeth are too damaged to save and must be extracted. Together, the implant and crown or implant and denture replace missing teeth.
  • Bridges and dentures – Whether fixed or removable, these sets of artificial teeth replace missing natural ones.

Functional restorations

  • Periodontal treatment – Treatments such as scaling and root planing for serious cases of gum disease can remove bacteria and provide a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth.
  • Orthodontics – Both traditional metal and Invisalign braces work to align teeth properly, correcting teeth rotation problems.
  • Mouthguards – A mouthguard custom made by your dentist can provide an effective treatment for nighttime bruxism (teeth grinding).

Some cosmetic dentistry specialists offer full-mouth restorations, during which they orchestrate the provision of multiple restorative procedures. The end result is often less expensive and more effective than a series of unrelated restorative procedures.

“Cosmetic dentistry offers you the chance to improve both your appearance and your health through dental restorations,” says Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentist with a practice in central Phoenix.
