Veneers for a New Smile

Veneers are wafer-thin covers for teeth that have problems. Veneers, made of porcelain or resin, cover the front portion of the teeth visible when you smile. Those teeth, important to first impressions (and lasting ones) can become dark and stained, not just with aging, but with regular life.

“Teeth take the brunt of a lot of life, from getting stained with what we eat and drink to darkening with medicines like tetracycline,” says Dr. Carol Ford from her Phoenix Cosmetic Dentist practice. “Veneers may not give you a new life, but they can give you a whole new look,” she continues.

In a recent WebMD article, “Dental Health and Veneers,” the most common reasons for veneers are repairing:

  • Discolored teeth. Teeth change color after root canal treatment; after using tetracycline or other drugs, or through excessive fluoride use or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth.
  • Worn down teeth, particularly if worn down unevenly.
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth. Veneers can repair teeth with both bulges and craters that disturb the contour.
  • Gaps between teeth. For example, a space between two front teeth can be closed.

Phoenix Dental OfficeVeneers are thin, permanent shells that cover the tooth the way an artificial nail covers your fingernail. They are used only on the front teeth—the ones that show when you smile. “Molars are meant for grinding, for chewing your food,” explains Dr. Ford. “They do the work and take enormous pressure. Your front teeth are designed to cut—like you do when you bite an apple. Front teeth don’t take the constant pressure of molars, so veneers can last many years on the front surface of a tooth.”

The first step in successfully designed and placed veneers is talking to your dentist. “Telling your dentist what you want to gain from veneers and discussing what will happen, how long it will take, and what to expect is a big step in getting the smile you want,” explains Dr. Ford.
