Three Mouthwashes Dr. Ford Recommends

Phoenix_DentistWhen you are working with your Phoenix dentist to improve your oral health regimen, it’s possible that he or she may recommend you rinse with a mouthwash, adding that habit to your daily brushing and flossing routine. If so, it’s important to understand the benefits of mouthwashes, as well as which ones are most effective.

The American Dental Association differentiates between “cosmetic” mouthwashes, which merely cover up halitosis (bad breath) or temporarily make your mouth feel fresher, and therapeutic mouthwashes, which can reduce tooth decay and plaque formation, temporarily eliminate halitosis, and prevent gum disease. Any mouthwash bearing the ADA emblem has been proven to be safe and effective, and can substantiate any claim that it makes, such as making your breath fresher or controlling gingivitis (the beginning stage of gum disease).

Phoenix dentist Dr. Carol Ford recommends the following mouthwashes to her patients.

  1. OxyFresh – This company’s line of mouthwashes contains a proprietary ingredient, Oxygene®, that attacks volatile sulfur compounds, a key component in halitosis. Several of its mouthwashes also contain the natural sweetener Xylitol that has been shown to inhibit the formation of plaque.
  2. CloSYS – For those needing a gentle mouthwash solution, CloSYS is alcohol-free and pH balanced. It kills 99.9 percent of harmful bacteria in 10 seconds and is unflavored.
  3. CariFree CTx3 – Designed specifically to treat those with active tooth decay issues, this mouthwash contains fluoride and Xylitol and provides pH neutralization. It is available in citrus, grape and mint flavors.

To get therapeutic value out of your mouthwash, you’ll want to use it twice a day. You can brush, floss and use mouthwash in any order you wish.

Dr. Ford, who is a cosmetic dentist in central Phoenix, says, “Mouthwashes can play an important role in enhancing the health of your mouth. If you choose a recommended product and use it consistently, you are likely to see good results.”
