Porcelain Veneers Prep

VeneerThe placement of porcelain veneers to improve the appearance of your smile can be one of the most cost-effective, least invasive dental restorations you can have done. However, to ensure a result you are happy with, your cosmetic dentist will play the roles of diagnostician, scientist and artist during the porcelain veneer preparation process.

Here’s a general overview of what you can expect as your cosmetic dentist helps you prepare to receive your porcelain veneers.

Steps involved in porcelain veneer preparation

  1. Your dentist will determine if porcelain veneers are right for you. He or she will perform a thorough examination of your mouth to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy, that veneers will correct the issues (including minor bite and rotation problems) that stand between you and a fabulous smile, and that you have enough healthy tooth structure to support your veneers.
  2. The dentist will take images of your teeth and make wax models of your veneers. At this point, you and your dentist may discuss the shape, placement and shade of your veneers. The model will help them send exactly the right specifications to the dental lab for your veneers.
  3. The preparation visit at the dentist’s office. This visit is where the dentist will remove a thin layer (0.5 mm) of your tooth enamel and place temporary veneers on your teeth.
  4. The “try-in” phase. The time between getting your temporary veneers and when your permanent porcelain veneers are bonded to your teeth is very significant. This is a good time to let your dentist know how you like the shade of your veneers, and if they look and function the way you want them to.
  5. Final veneer placement. When your final porcelain veneers arrive, about two weeks after your preparation visit, your dentist will most likely cement them in all at once.

Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentist with a practice in central Phoenix, says, “The creation of porcelain veneers is both an art and a science. We partner with our clients to ensure the preparation phase leads to a stunning end result!”
