Men’s Health Month + Oral Health

Oral_healthJune is Men’s Health Month, and all across the United States, men and boys are encouraged to take steps to keep themselves healthy at all stages of their life – by engaging in good self-care, going for regular checkups, and getting preventive screenings.

One very important part of men’s health is oral health. Many significant health conditions are impacted by the health of our teeth and gums, and many early warning signs of these conditions can be detected by dentists.

While studies report that men lag behind women in taking care of their oral health, the good news is that more and more men are taking steps to preserve their teeth and gums. And why might they do that? It may just be that men are realizing the value of a healthy, attractive smile. Here are a few advantages enjoyed by men who invest in their oral health…

It can help them on the job. Men are changing jobs multiple times throughout their career, and they understand that nice-looking teeth can give them an edge when competing for a position. In addition to parterning with their dentist to keep their teeth healthy, men are also requesting teeth whitening, porcelain veneers and other cosmetic procedures to help their smiles become more handsome, as well.

  • It can make them a more attractive friend or mate, no matter what their age. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry recently found that 45 percent of dental consumers surveyed agreed that a smile is the most attractive physical feature, no matter what a person’s age.
  • It can help them make a great first impression with everyone. That same AACD survey mentioned above revealed that nearly half of all survey respondents (48 percent) said that a smile is the most memorable feature they notice when first meeting someone – almost twice the number who said that the first thing a person says is the most memorable!

“Men all over the country are realizing how smart it is to be health conscious,” says Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentist in practice in central Phoenix. “And now that they understand the cosmetic and medical benefits of paying attention to oral health, many are also including smile-enhancing activities in their daily care regimens!”
