Investing In Invisalign

InvisalignAdults who desire straighter teeth may often wonder about the differences between Invisalign braces and traditional wire-and-metal braces. While there are many similarities between the two types of orthodontics, Invisalign (a brand name for clear teeth aligners) has several distinct advantages over traditional braces for those patients who are good candidates for them.

Metal braces use wires attached to metal pieces to guide teeth into the desired position. By contrast, Invisalign braces are actually tight-fitting, custom-made plastic retainers that are attached to the teeth, but not in as fixed a way as metal braces. The main advantages of Invisalign braces is that they are:

  • Invisible – it’s very difficult for others to see your clear teeth aligners.
  • Removable – You can take out your Invisalign braces to eat and to clean your teeth. This significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay or gum disease forming as a result of not being able to clean near your orthodontics properly.
  • Safer – Invisalign braces have no sharp edges that can puncture and scratch the insides of the mouth and gums. Clear teeth aligners also use less force on the teeth to straighten them.
  • Quicker – Many patients complete their course of treatment with clear teeth aligners in less than a year.

Invisalign is not appropriate for all patients. Those who have severe crowding or tooth movement issues, or who have significant bite issues will probably need to be treated with traditional braces. But if your tooth movement and crowding issues are mild, Invisalign may work well.

“You don’t have to look 13 again to improve the way your teeth look and function,” says Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentist who practices in central Phoenix. “Invisalign is more attractive, faster and can actually improve your long-term dental health!”
