Designing Your Unique Smile

Dental ImplantsYour smile is one-of-a-kind. No one else’s smile is just like yours. What makes it so special? “Each one of your teeth is unique,” says Dr. Carol Ford from her Phoenix cosmetic dentistry office. “Each tooth has its own size, shape, and look, which gives you your special smile identity,” she adds.

Part of  your smile is shaped by your teeth, and part by gums that frame your teeth. Healthy, pink gums that are tight against the teeth are the ideal. But not every gum line is shaped like the ideal. Some gums are too high, some are too low, and some are uneven—a mix of high and low.

If your gums are too high, your teeth will look small, reducing the size of your smile. If your gums are too low, your teeth will look too long, giving you a lot of exposed teeth when you smile, making you pull your lips back more in order to show both upper and lower teeth. Uneven gums create a crowded or messy look, rather than two neat lines of upper and lower teeth that make up a wonderful smile.

“No matter what the problem is, your dentist can design a smile that makes the most of your natural teeth,” says Dr. Ford.

There are many reasons your gums may need re-shaping. You may have inherited your gum shape, or you may have periodontal disease or decay. Your dentist will be able to identify the underlying problem, and give you several options for gum contouring.

According to WebMD, “Gum contouring surgery is performed in the dentist’s office. Currently, dentists use scalpels, lasers, and radiosurgery to perform the gum contouring procedure. Ask your dentist which technique would be the most suitable for your situation.”

“Your dentist will often draw a line with a pen to show you how your gums will look after the gum restructuring is complete,” says Dr. Ford. “It’s important for a smile design to have results that are both cosmetically and medically healthy,” she adds.

After a few days of recovery and being careful about the food you eat (no seeds or tough fibers) you will have a bright, youthful smile.
