Same Day Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic_DentistryAs we noted on this blog earlier this month, it’s possible to do a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures in only a single appointment. Replacing amalgam fillings with composite ones, installing porcelain veneers, and recontouring gum tissue can all happen quickly, and provide you with dazzling changes to your appearance.

But what about folks for whom more intensive interventions are needed? Can these people undergo a rapid change in oral health through cosmetic dentistry?

The answer to that question is “yes, they can.” For patients who need to replace all of their natural teeth with dental implants, it is possible to deliver an entire set of upper and lower overdentures in just one day. This process is known as “teeth in a day” and here’s how it works:

  1. You will visit your cosmetic dentistry professional and have your oral health assessed. He or she will determine if you’re a good candidate for teeth in a day and make a referral to the oral surgeon who will perform the procedure.
  2. You will meet with your treatment team and review your plan. At this appointment, you will most likely schedule your “teeth in a day” procedure.
  3. On the day of your appointment, you’ll undergo oral surgery under local anesthetic, or IV sedation if you prefer. Any remaining natural teeth will be extracted, and the dental implants will be embedded in your jaw.
  4. A temporary set of overdentures will be placed on top of the implants, and you’ll be able to begin using them immediately! (Later, your cosmetic dentistry professional will fit you with a permanent set of overdentures that will look and function just the same as – if not better than – your natural teeth.)

“Teeth in a day can provide dramatic and rapid – literally speaking, overnight – improvements in a patient’s oral health, not to mention the look and function of their teeth,” says Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentistry practitioner with an office in central Phoenix. “It’s well worth looking into if you’ve had significant issues with your natural teeth and are looking for a lasting solution that can be in place quickly.”
