Bright, White Smiles With Veneers

Most people desire having a smile with a mouth full of shiny white teeth. However, many of us have visibly stained teeth in our “smile zone.” Some stains are extrinsic, and may be caused by deeply pigmented food or drink, tobacco use, poor dental hygiene, or other factors. Extrinsic stains often can be addressed with whitening treatments, which can be delivered in your dentist’s office or through take-home or over-the-counter treatments.

However, some types of stains are intrinsic, and impact parts of the teeth below the surface enamel. These stains can be caused veneersby genetic conditions, the use of specific types of antibiotics and other reasons. Intrinsic stains aren’t improved by whitening – but you can obtain the bright smile you seek if you have porcelain veneers placed on the stained teeth. Veneers also can correct issues with the shape and rotation of your teeth, in addition to brightening their shade.

How Veneers Brighten Your Teeth

If your cosmetic dentist agrees that you are a good candidate for veneers, he or she will conduct a thorough examination and evaluate the health of your teeth before beginning the preparation of your teeth for the procedure. After that, you will experience the following:

  1. The dentist will trim away a layer of enamel from your impacted teeth.
  2. Your dentist will match the shade of the veneer with the teeth on either side of it. This will make your new veneer look completely natural.
  3. He or she will then take an impression of the tooth to receive the veneer. Your veneer will be fabricated from this impression.
  4. If necessary, your dentist will attach a temporary veneer while your permanent veneer is being fabricated.
  5. At a separate appointment, your dentist will test the fit and shape and shade of your permanent veneer, and bond it into place.

“Regardless of how your teeth acquired a stain, it is possible to make them white and bright again,” says Dr. Carol Ford, a cosmetic dentist whose practice, Dr. Carol Ford & Associates, is in central Phoenix. “Veneers can brighten teeth you may have written off as hopelessly stained, and it may even correct some other imperfections at the same time!”
