Laser Dental Hygiene & Periodontal Treatment

The best way to keep your teeth and smile bright is regular visits to your dental hygienist in Dr. Ford’s office. The hygienist will help you learn simple and easy routines to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Gum disease isn’t something you can afford to ignore. Recent research shows that inflammation and infection in your mouth can affect other systems in your body. Pregnant women can experience low birth-weight deliveries; diabetics can double their chance of kidney failure and heart disease. Treating gum disease early is good for your overall health.

If you do have gum disease, and 80% of the population does, there are new treatments available. Diode lasers are now used for non-invasive periodontal treatment. A laser is concentrated light (infrared spectrum) and uses a light touch with a glass fiber.

Periodontal (gum) therapy may be performed over a number of weeks, depending on the amount of disease around your teeth. Lasers are precise and perform several functions at once. Using lasers not only removes diseased tissues and kills bacteria, but also seals blood vessels and nerve endings, which reduces post treatment pain and swelling.

Lasers are also used during Periodontal maintenance treatment.  Quick, efficient, and painless, bacterial reduction keeps your mouth in good shape and prevents the reoccurrence of gum disease. Laser treatments also reduce bleeding and inflammation, keeping your gums firm, healthy and clean.

Lasers also perform several other beneficial treatments: they can be used to desensitize the nerve endings of sensitive teeth, and they are used in treating canker sores and fever blisters. If the infections are caught early enough, lasers can shorten the time of the outbreak, decrease discomfort and reduce swelling.  Dr. Ford also uses laser treatment to level gum tissue heights during cosmetic treatment and perform frenectomies painlessly.

Whether you need to schedule a routine cleaning or have more extensive work, please ask your hygienist all the questions you need to feel comfortable.
