Designing a Perfect Smile For Your Mouth

VeneersThe perfect smile is one that looks great on you. One that has teeth that look authentic and natural. “The key to a youthful looking smile is making teeth look natural. Real teeth are aligned well, are shaped nicely, but they all look a bit different,” says Dr. Carol Ford from her cosmetic dentistry office in Phoenix. “Nothing says ‘fake’ faster than a row of large, prominent, identically-shaped teeth,” she adds.

How do you know if it’s time to update the look of your smile? Take a close look at your teeth. Are they wearing down? As we age, teeth gradually show the wear and tear of years of chewing and biting. The tooth itself gets shorter.  If you grind or clench your teeth, the wear happens faster or is more extensive.

“There are several ways to extend the vertical dimension of teeth,” says Dr. Ford. Veneers can make a tooth look longer, and gum contouring can reshape the frame of the tooth for a better vertical dimension,” she adds.

If your smile is designed with veneers, the veneers will be the right size for your mouth, but you may feel that they are suddenly too big. That’s not unusual. “We grow accustomed to small changes as they occur,” says Dr. Ford. “But worn teeth won’t look attractive, even if you have adjusted to them over time,” she adds.

“Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length,” explains WebMD.  Teeth with chips or breaks or uneven teeth can be covered with veneers for a smile that takes years off your look. “What time and wear has taken away, a well-designed veneer can bring back,” says Dr. Ford. “A smile is your gift to the world, but beautiful veneers are a gift for your smile,” she adds.
